County Animal Waste and Shoreline Zoning Ordinances
Animal Waste Ordinance - The Land & Water Conservation Department
is responsible for overseeing the County Animal Waste Ordinance. Any time a
farmer wishes to install a manure storage facility within the County, they
must first obtain a permit. In addition, the ordinance requires that
facilities must meet all NRCS Technical standards and guidelines. All
phases of installation must be inspected by a representative of the LWCD
and the completed practice must be approved before a facility may be put
into operation. The existing ordinance will likely be revised over the
fall and winter of 2001-2002 with assistance from area farmers.
Shoreline Zoning Ordinance - The new County Shoreline Zoning
Ordinance was approved by the County Board in the Fall of 1999. The
ordinance requires that anyone newly developing, or expanding existing
shoreline property in Washburn County must keep or restore a natural
shoreline. The specifics vary by lake-class, however the basics are the
same in that landowners must leave a buffer of natural vegetation between
the lakeshore and their dwelling. A 30ft. viewing corridor is allowed
through which landowners can enjoy a partially screened view of the lake.
The Zoning Department refers shoreline property owners obtaining building permits to the Land & Water Conservation Department for assistance in complying with the Ordinance.
