Lightweight Utility Vehicles (LUV) Pilot Project
Washburn County has chosen to participate in a pilot project that will test the impacts of Lightweight Utility Vehicles on ATV trails. Effective for the Memorial Weekend ATV trail opener in Washburn County, LUV’s will be allowed to operate on ATV trails.
Washburn County has adopted a definition and an ordinance for LUV’s. In general, an LUV will be defined as a machine not wider than 62 inches; no more than 1300 pounds; has side by side seating; is equipped with a cargo box; is not a go-cart, golf cart, or tracked vehicle; and is registered as an LUV.
LUV registration will be free, and operators are required to register once per year per county of operation. Users can register online, using the registration link below. Fill out the form, click print to carry proof of registration, and click submit. Operators are required to carry a copy of the registration. Registration forms will also be available through various vendors in the area.
Please note that Washburn and Sawyer County are the only two counties in the area participating in the project. LUV operation on trails and routes in adjoining counties is not permitted. Please contact the Washburn County Forestry Department for more information.
