ATV Trails

At this time there are three designated ATV trails on the Washburn County Forest. These are the Wild River Trail, Spider Lake Loop, and Minong trail. ATV trails are open to motor vehicles under 900 pounds Two wheel-motorized travel is prohibited. We are currently looking at other potential trails throughout the County.

Please note that with the exception of the Wild River Trail, ATV use is not permitted anywhere on the County Forest between April 1 through the first Friday before Memorial Weekend. All ATV use is prohibited at any time that DNR fire danger is listed at very high or higher.

Wild River Trail

The Wild River Trail is a 96-mile recreation corridor traveling along an abandoned railroad grade. This is a multiple use trail open to all users, including motorized uses under 700 pounds. The trail is currently open between Rice Lake and Solon Springs. 40 miles of the Wild River Trail crosses Washburn County. Parking is available in Sarona, downtown Spooner, Trego, and Minong.

Stony Brook Trail

The 20 mile Stony Brook ATV trail connects the Minong area with Sawyer County. This trail links to the Wild River Trail, just south of Minong and connects near Nelson Lake. The trail runs primarily on wooded trails through the Washburn County Forest, and utilizes the Waggoner and Wozny town roads as connections on the eastern edge of the trail system. This trail is open for 3-season ATV use with closure from April 1 through the first Friday before Memorial Weekend.

Spider Lake ATV Trail

The heart of 18 mile spider Lake ATV trail system is a loop around the Spider Lake chain in the Birchwood area. The trail also connects south to the Tuscobia Trail west of Birchwood and north to the Birchwood Firelane. This north connection will be the future link to the Harmon Lake and Beaverbrook trails that will ultimately link to Spooner.

Harmon Lake ATV Trail

The Harmon Lake ATV Trail is a 12 mile trail connection between the Beaverbrook Trail and the Spider Lake Loop system. This connector provides an ATV trail link between Spooner, the Wild River Trail, and the village of Birchwood.
